Lizzie, Franny and Layefa

Director Franny Armstrong, Layefa Malemi (Nigerian star of the film) and Producer Lizzie Gillett posing for a team photo. The filmmaking duo went to Nigeria twice and found Layefa Malemi after travelling to many small villages in the Niger Delta and speaking to as many of the local women as possible. Layefa lives in absolute poverty in a small village in Nigeria from which Shell extracts tens of millions of dollars worth of oil every week. She dreams of becoming a doctor, but must fish in the oil-infested waters for four years to raise the funds.
