oloibiri well

The Oloibiri Well was the first ever drilled in Nigera, by Shell in June 1956. Oil has made the Delta Nigeria’s main source of income; comprising 20% of GDP, 95% of foreign exchange earnings, and approximately 65% of budgetary revenues.  Despite this natural bounty, there has been no commensurate improvement in the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians. For example, 70% of Nigerians live on below one dollar a day, the United Nations specified poverty line, and the country ranks 151st out of the 175 countries in the UN Human Development Index.
