War stories needed

Answer:
Iraqi widows on the streets in Jordan

Morning,

Anyone got any ideas for our latest conundrum...?

We're on the search for the final character for Crude. To represent War. (Oil war, obviously).

Probably going to be an Iraq story. But trying not to be an obvious one.
And preferably possible to film without going to Iraq itself, as it currently seems to be too dangerous for Western journalists.

Needs to be a woman, as the men are dominating at the moment. Preferably has some close oil connection (eg former oil worker) as well as the war-over-oil connection.

The main point is the devastation of war, so needs to be very emotional and shocking.

The best two suggestions so far are:

1. An 18-year-old Iraqi who has been living in the UK since 2003, as they arrived here during the war as a minor and got automatic asylum. But - guess what - when they turn 18 they get kicked out. We'd probably just follow them as far as Baghdad airport and leave them on a poignant disappearing through the doors to face their future shot.

Advantages: Features two countries, which adds to the "everything is connected" central theme. Original-ish angle.

Disadvantages: Wouldn't get much Middle East/desert visuals.

2. An Iraqi widow living in eg Jordan, having lost her husband/ children/ home/ job. Apparently women are living on the streets and working as prostitutes etc.

Advantages: Harrowing. Set in Middle East, which is (obviously) key oil area not currently featured in Crude.

Disadvantages: A bit obvious. Would need a clear narrative of her own. (eg trying to find a missing relative).

Any thoughts?
Heard any striking stories?
Know any organisations working in this field?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks v much,
