Screenings in Philippines

22nd November. This page is under construction, sorry for all the mess. The screening information is correct.

One of the most successful countries involved in the Global Premiere on September 22nd, with packed out cinemas and loads of activism with politicians and celebrities putting pressure on the government in light of the 2009 floods. People are continuing to book through Indiescreenings.net

Thanks to all those who pitched in to the "green carpet" screening of "THE AGE OF STUPID" at the Cinema 3 of Glorietta 4 last night. We had more than 400 people in the theater with GP supporters, campaign partners volunteers, partners in the GCCA Pilipinas.

A good number of supporters and their family/friends showed up. There was a prospective major donor who also came and there were some sign-ups, too!

The event was graced by celebrities including TV personalities (Tintin Bersola, Rhianne Ramos) and lifestyle writers (Maurice Arcache, Tim Yap, Beth Day-Romulo). Former Rep. Nereus Acosta representing the Liberal Party was there and an Undersecretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development also came. There were some embassy reps, who asked not to be identified as such.

The program, which almost started on time (10 mins late) was hosted by Roy Alvarez, an actor and environmentalist. The opening video was the tcktcktck/Beds are Burning video. Then, Von, in his opening speech, challenged the Philippine government to be true to their climate change rhetoric and to stop issuing permits to build new coal plants. He also challenged politicians, specially the presidential aspirants, to articulate their vision re: climate change, and posed the question " are you stupid?" The Presidential Adviser on Global Warming and Climate Change, Sec. Heherson T. Alvarez was also present and he outlined the direction that the Philippine government and the UN will have to take to avoid being "stupid" and enjoined everyone to spread the word about the need to act on climate change.

And then, AOS. After the movie, we allowed time for questions. Since there weren't any, we explained how they can be part of the GCCA campaign. Mr. Shehal Soneji, Interim Country Director of OXFAM GB gave the closing remarks.

We also had a photo wall for the virtual march where we got almost 200 photo-petitions.

As the program was closing, a GP video (public service announcement) re the recent typhoon was shown, which created quite an impact, I think. As people filed-out of the cinema there were more media interviews, with the AOS banner as backdrop.

All in all, it was a good day/night. The DVD/LCD worked.... the cocktails were finished in due time....those who were expected, came. Of course, there were some hitches, but nothing serious.

Again, thanks to everyone (those who helped with the invitations, logistics, programme, ushers, designs, documentation) who made the event happen.

Next steps: there will be other screenings as we'll use this to build up interest for the Global Day of Action and use the YoU Turn the Earth for public mobilization. So, watch out!
